How to Stay Organized During a Move with Reusable Moving Totes

A good packing system can turn moving day from chaotic to manageable. Here's how to keep things organized when you're using reusable moving totes.

Start with a simple plan

Before you start packing, take a few minutes to plan. Decide which rooms to tackle first, which items you'll need access to during the move, and how you'll label each tote.

Label by room

Use the included labels and Sharpie to mark each tote with the room it belongs in. Color-coded labels (one color per room) can speed up unloading.

Number every tote

Write a number on each tote and keep a short list of what's inside. You don't need a full inventory — just enough detail to find essentials quickly.

Pack essentials separately

Set aside a few totes for everyday items: phone chargers, basic kitchen supplies, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, and anything you'll need the first night.

Group fragile items

Use towels, linens, and clothing as padding around glassware and electronics. Keep fragile totes together so they're loaded last and unloaded first.

Make a first-night tote

Pack one tote with bedding, towels, toiletries, and chargers. Label it clearly — that one tote usually saves a frustrating search at the end of a long moving day.

Unpack by priority

Start with kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Stack remaining totes in a single room or garage so the rest of the home feels settled while you work through the lower-priority boxes.
